Dr. Joseph Esparza

Faculty

Dr. Joseph Esparza holds a PhD in History from Montana State University, specializing in American History, the History of Science, Intellectual History, and Environmental History. He holds a position as Instructor of Catholic Studies at Carroll College in Helena, Montana, where he teaches courses at the intersection of history, culture, and Catholic thought. Dr. Esparza is interested in what it means to live virtuously with the human and natural worlds, and how to view those in the past as part of a shared human condition, as well as interpreting objective good and evil and subjective human choice in the context of a historic human condition. His philosophy of history is based upon a theological-anthropological framework, source analysis, contextualization, and critical inquiry of the past. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Esparza is an organist and enjoys living in the West, where he goes mountaineering, climbing, and backcountry skiing frequently.
